Federal Authorities Urge Travelers to Avoid Mariposa Crossing

 

There was a shooting incident this afternoon at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales. According to authorities, no law enforcement officials were shot, however the southbound lanes into Mexico are closed for the evening so officials can conduct an investigation.

Travelers from the south are also advised to avoid the Mariposa Port of Entry this evening.

Update:

A 26-year-old Mexican National with a 16-year-old passenger in his vehicle attempting to flee from Border Patrol officers drove southbound into the Mariposa Port of Entry in an attempt to cross the border into Mexico. The vehicle allegedly swerved toward officials working at the border, who fired their service weapons at the passengers in the vehicle.

The driver, who was shot several times, was airlifted to a Tucson hospital. The passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Mariposa Port of Entry was closed from the time of the event until approximately 8:00 p.m. as authorities investigated the incident.
