Nogales Women Found Beaten, Burned in Separate Incidents

October 24, 2016

Two women were killed on subsequent Sundays in October, 2016 in Nogales, Mexico. One was beaten to death and the other was burned beyond recognition. No suspects have been arrested in the crimes.

The newspaper El Diario de Sonora reported this morning that the charred remains of what is believed to be a woman were discovered yesterday in a vacant lot in the Colonia Bella Vista neighborhood of Nogales, Mexico.

The newspaper reported that shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 23, fire and police units were called to Zorro Street where the body was discovered, just outside of a local landfill. At least one local report mentioned that the woman may have been burned alive.

The woman’s remains were taken to a local funeral home, where the investigation continues.

And the Noticias de Nogales website reported that one week earlier, at approximately 9:00 p.m. on the night of Sunday, October 16, a woman who had recently been deported from the United States had been beaten to death in Nogales, Sonora.

Reporter Cesar Barron reported that 32-year-old Maribel Valenzuela, formerly of Rio Rico, Arizona, was attended to by police and Red Cross paramedics, but was pronounced dead at the scene. The beating took place on Los Papagos Street, in the Colonia Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood.

Barron’s report mentioned that a call to the emergency services phone number had indicated that the woman had been beaten by two men.
