Existing therapies are explored as medications to minimize coronavirus effects
President Trump announced this morning in the press conference for the COVID-19 novel coronavirus task force that existing anti-viral therapies are being explored as medications that may minimize the effects of the novel coronavirus.
Trump specifically mentioned that the anti-malarial medication chloroquine and its derivative hydroxychloroquine are currently being tested.
Chloroquine has been widely used for 40 years as an anti-malarial drug and there is hope that it and its derivative hydroxychloroquine can now be used to battle the effects of the deadly pathogen.
The medications are currently in FDA clinical trials to determine their safety and efficacy in the treatment of the coronavirus.
The chloroquine trials reportedly look promising so far but will take several months to determine the safety and efficacy of the medication when prescribed for COVID-19.
In a related story, according to news reports Chinese scientists tested chloroquine on coronavirus patients and found it to only slightly shorten the course of the COVID-19 infection.
Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are both available for purchase at discount pharmacies in Nogales, Mexico.
Please note: Although your physician can prescribe medications for “off-label” uses, both of these medications are currently in clinical trials for use in treating the novel coronavirus and have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for that indication.
